Abstract

According to UNESCO, there remain 61 million children of primary school age who are not in school around the world. Lack of access to quality education is a problem which disproportionately affects marginalised and vulnerable groups. The groups most affected include disabled children, ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities, street children, children living in informal settlements and in remote areas, and nomadic children. In its 2012 report 'Equity and Inclusion for All in Education', the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) UK advocates that DFID dedicate adequate resources to tackling the exclusion of all marginalised groups from education in a strategic manner, in line with Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 2 to achieve universal primary education, the Education for All (EFA) goals and international human rights instruments such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
