Abstract

El aguará guazú es mono-filetico y por lo tanto difícil de confundir con otras especies de cánidos. Sin embargo, fue descrito por los agentes de la corona portuguesa, a su llegada a Brasil como “el lobo”, lo que lo asocia a una especie perseguida y extirpada en muchas partes de la Europa contemporánea a la colonización brasileña. Por otro lado el aguará guazú es una especie endemica y carismática, con el potencial de ser una especie bandera para la conservación del bioma Cerrado, uno de los centros más importantes de la biodiversidad en Brasil y América del Sur.

Las relaciones entre los cánidos grandes y poblaciones humanas se han estudiado en todo el mundo debido a su papel crucial en la situación de especies amenazadas, y en el desarrollo de estrategias de conservación. Los studios sugieren la necesidad de invertir en campañas de información para aclarar las creencias erróneas y fomentar valores positivos hacia el aguará guazú, y apuntan a la necesidad de la participación y del apoyo de la población local para el éxito de los planes de conservación. Este capítulo discutirá diversos elementos que componen la relación entre las poblaciones humanas y el aguará guazú con respecto a su situación en Brasil, pero es aplicable a la conservación de la especie en otras zonas donde se encuentra distribuida.
