Description

Sound and radio artist Magz Hall is a speaker at The Sound Of Story 2015: two days of talks, screenings and workshops that explore the creative potential of sound in the storytelling process.

Magz Hall is a senior radio lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University and the co-founder of Radio Arts, an independent artists’ group based in East Kent engaged in experimental broadcasting projects.

Her sound work explores the artistic potential of radio and its use outside of conventional settings. Her projects have been exhibited internationally, including at Tate Britain, Deep Wireless Festival Toronto and MACBA Barcelona, and broadcast on stations including the BBC, Resonance FM, Reboot FM (Germany), Radio Papesse (Italy) and CKLN FM (Canada).

Since 2008, Hall has produced a series of nine radio art installations, broadcasts and actions, which consider alternative futures for the FM as an overarching theme, including Tree Radio (2015) for Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Dream Vessels (2015), transmitting FM pots; and Sound Train (2012), a performance and public radio intervention from Canterbury to London.

Her ambisonic soundtrack of Hong Kong Airport at the British Museum in 2004, was described as “extraordinary” by Richard J. Williams in his book The Anxious City. In Spiritual Radio (2014), made for Unbinding the Book at the Whitechapel Gallery, "pages of the book are held shut by copper nails, connected to form a transmitter circuit through which words flow in an eternal loop…the text awaits the listener who is tuned to the right frequency,” (The Guardian).

Hall was recently awarded a PhD “Radio After Radio: Redefining Radio Art in the Light of New Media Technology through Expanded Practice” at CRISAP University of the Arts, for which she produced a series of works concerned with speculative futures of FM inspired by 100 years of international radio art practice.
