Description | The series of six photographs of a Black female footballer. The environmental portrait explores identity, representation, and community, aligning with my research into Black British visual arts and cultural contributions. Through autoethnography, the project reflects my subjective connection to themes of intersectionality, particularly race and gender. As a Black woman documenting another Black woman’s journey in sport, this work critically engages with shared narratives and challenges stereotypes about Black women in traditionally male-dominated spaces. The visual documentation becomes a personal and collective reflection of empowerment and resilience. From an ethnographic perspective, the series captures the cultural significance of football within the local community. It documents lived experiences, emphasizing the subject’s role in fostering representation and belonging in grassroots sports. By observing and engaging with the footballer and her environment, the project offers a rich context for analysis, revealing how sports intersect with cultural identity and societal dynamics. The images also serve as a form of visual ethnography, using photography as both an artistic medium and a tool for sociocultural critique. They highlight physical movement and the emotional and symbolic dimensions of the subject’s presence. The series contributes to my PhD portfolio, offering a multidimensional exploration of identity and representation. A testament to the richness of Black British experiences, underscoring the intersection of art, culture, and social history in my academic and creative work. |
