Abstract | This chapter explores our relationship, as humans, with the rest of the living world. It recognizes our kinship with all other organisms and the entangled nature of our affiliation which can be both benign and belligerent. The chapter explores through two case studies the ways in which this rich view of nature can be used to enhance how students in higher education see the world and to underpin sustainability education both in HE and beyond. The authors share a wider interest in ‘green heritage’, an approach that values nature as well as built heritage. Green heritage involves sustaining or restoring the living element within heritage spaces, in the same way that ‘blue heritage’ respects and sustains our historic salt and fresh water areas. Both ‘blue’ and ‘green’ heritage also involve understanding and interpretation of these sites with reference to the living world, past, present, and future. This merging of past present and future and the emphasis on the diversity of life resonate with Haraway’s concept of entangled ‘natureculture’. |
