Description | Become a light pilgrim at Time, an event illuminating and celebrating the World Heritage Sites of St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church. This event is part of a research project organised by Jane Lovell, Howard Griffin and Andy Hurst, with thanks to English Heritage and St Martin's Church. It is the only occasion that all three parts of Canterbury's World Heritage Site have been lit on the same night. ‘Palimpsest’ at St Augustine's Abbey, treats the ruined building as a manuscript containing layers of meaning, some of which are visible, others hidden beneath the surface. The meanings arose from the gaze of abbey workers and visitors and are projected back onto its material surface, as jumbled by time as the stones of the building. ‘Queen Bertha's Dream’ in St Martin’s Churchyard represents the conversation of time and growth through the soundscape and light art, touching on the roots of the site from its Anglo-Saxon past to today. Experience the presence of the past. This invitation-only event was attended by 35 participants and local stakeholders. |
