Abstract

Recent advances in cell and gene therapies are offering new, effective treatment options for patients with ultra-rare and life-threatening conditions. Stem cell-based medicine is now established and will undoubtedly advance towards treating a progressively larger spectrum of diseases. Over the past few years, this field has started to come of age. Over the next decade, it is expected to achieve its long-anticipated potential and begin to fundamentally reshape clinical medicine as we know it. However, although regenerative medicine has the potential to improve health and deliver economic benefits, this relatively new field faces challenges. The consequences of not tackling these challenges would be to waste investment, researcher activity and aspirations to cure, as well as to undermine patient protection. On the other hand, developing policies and procedures are expected to support the development of novel therapies that are both safe and effective. This chapter will address some critical scientific issues for evidence-based implementation and regulation of regenerative medicine. It will start by addressing the challenges facing regenerative medicine followed by the available opportunities and how to respond to these challenges. The chapter will conclude with a discussion to answer the question: is there a bright future for regenerative medicine?
