Abstract

Future Stories is a new arts and health initiative that aims to explore the ways in which virtual reality (VR) can be used to address the social needs of children, teenagers and their carers’ in hospital settings. The article will provide an account of a pilot project exploring the application of an emergent arts and health approach to a long stay paediatric population at Queensland Children’s Hospital, Brisbane. Working with a small group of participants and their carers’, the pilot used virtual reality technology to create experiences that were not limited by what was physically and physiologically possible for the target group. In the article, we will explore how the process aimed to develop meaning and memory making through the recreation of familiar, fantasy and favourite environments for children within the hospital setting.
