Abstract | Echoing Virginia Woolf's views on women in professions, this article aims to confront the low visibility of Sri Lankan women lawyers particularly under the category of Counsels as well as in higher-ranked positions within the ecosystem of the legal profession. While recognising historically based colonial formal legal obstacles for women's entry into Law the article aims to provoke further inquiry into women lawyers' recognition as successful practitioners, the possibility of opting to function within any sector of the profession based on individual aspirations rather than the socially and culturally constructed expectations. The paper will rely on a sociological and comparative approach by reflecting on certain universal limitations for women in the legal profession. |
