Abstract

This chapter describes the evolution of modern criminal investigations from a legal-comparative perspective, analysing the relevance of the rule of law on the individual discretion of police officers who work as criminal investigators, while taking into account the mutual influence between national jurisdictions as well as the harmonising effect of supranational norms such as the European Convention on Human rights (ECHR).
