Description

This talk tells the story of the events and consequences of the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 16 August 1819. It sets out the context of the changing face of Britain, following industrialisation, with the rise of the urban dwelling working class, and the lack of representation in Parliament for both workers and northern cities and towns. The influence and roles of Thomas Paine, Thomas Hunt and Mary Fildes are discussed, with reference to both parliamentary reform and the emergence of the new women's groups.
