Abstract

This chapter considers research relating to policing mental health and the challenges facing the criminal justice system of care in the community and the growing mental health problem in England and Wales. Joint working policies have put additional pressure on the police to collaborate with local mental health services, social services, probation and addiction services which has changed the face of policing and the remit of the police when it comes to members of the public that experience mental health problems. The comorbidity of crime and mental health problems will be considered and the additional pressure on the police due to the limited support available for treatment of mental health problems.
