Description | A consideration of the ways in which death, loss and grief are treated in the repertoire of catches in glees in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The convivial nature of this music may make it a surprising choice of repertoire to use in a study of this nature, but the paper serves to demonstrate that the repertoire embraces a range of subject matter far beyond the popularly-assumed restrictions of wine, women and song. |
