Abstract

Beethoven's 'Diabelli' variations, op. 120, were advertised in 1823 as a 'serious' work, even though variations tended to be considered a 'light' genre. The division between repertoire for Kenner and Liebhaber (for connoisseurs and amateurs) in 1800 Vienna is discussed and works that can be considered as forerunners of Beethoven's work are described, including 36 keyboard variations (1648) on a theme by Emperor Ferdinand III by Wolfgang Ebner, published in the series Museum für Klaviermusik by Sigmund Anton Steiner, between 1817 and 1826
