Abstract | This chapter examines different historical interpretations of childhood and identifies and evaluates some of the salient themes and forms of discourse that have surrounded the major traditions of research into childhood. I will argue that the general tension between the existing social and material world, and the possibility for changing this world, have had an effect on the conceptualisation of childhood throughout the ages. In much previous analyses the emphasis is located on what is commonly perceived as the Western world. Space precludes discussion of childhood outside North America and most of Europe and in an attempt to reach a clear sense of detail, the focus is selective and stresses locations where, due to the documentary sources, the patterns of childhood were more apparent. It is also significantly about education and schooling. |
