Abstract

The first in-depth study of William Alexander’s political tragedies and the ways in which they are in dialogue with King James’s writings. This chapter is also an attempt to revive interest in Alexander, who has tended to be overlooked by scholarship because those working on English literature consider him a Scottish author, while scholars of Scottish literature see him as someone working at/for James’s English court. I discuss him as a key mediator between the two traditions.
