Single Combat - Roger Redgate And Matt Wright
Single Combat is a tense open form work for shuffling CD or downloadable mp3s on shuffle mode. The idea was to create an engaging, long term listening experience from 77 sonic fragments ripped from improvisations between Roger Redgate (electric violin) and Matt Wright (turntable/laptop). One day of improvisations took place on 18th July 2014 and Wright mixed the material over the summer of 2014, completing the final fragments in early November 2014.
Roger Redgate is a composer, conductor and improviser. He graduated at the Royal College of Music, where he won prizes for composition, violin performance, harmony and counterpoint, studying composition with Edwin Roxburgh. He continued his studies in Freiberg with Brian Ferneyhough. He was invited as guest composer and conductor at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik from 1984-1994 where he received the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis for composition. His compositions have been performed extensively throughout Europe, Australia and the USA and he has received commissions from the BBC, the French Ministry of Culture, the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, The Huddersfield Festival, the Venice Biennale and Ensemble 21 New York. His compositions are published by Editions Henry Lemoine, Paris, United Music Publishers, London and Composers Edition. He is professor of Composition at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Matt Wright works as a composer, improviser and sound artist at the edges of concert and club culture, working with ensembles, turntables, laptops and surround sound installations to create post-DJ, post-minimal multichannel music that embraces hip hop, avant garde and ‘free’ traditions. He works closely with Evan Parker (including the CD ‘Trance Map’ and duo, trio and ensemble performances in New York, London and Paris) with Ensemble Klang in The Hague (including the CD ‘Music at the Edge of Collapse’), with Bl!ndman and Champ D'Action in Brussels; with The Six Tones in Malmo, Sweden and Hanoi, Vietnam; with Ensemble Offspring in Sydney, and with his own ensemble Splinter Cell. His work has been presented at the Sydney Opera House, Le Poisson Rouge (New York), the Muziekcentrum an ‘t IJ (Amsterdam), The Kim Ma Theatre (Vietnam) and Abbey Road Studios, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. He has been commissioned by, amongst others, The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and the MATA Festival (New York) and his work has been broadcast on TV across Europe and on radio globally, including a two-hour focus on his work on the ABC Network in Australia. Reviews of his work have appeared in the New York Times, the Sydney Morning Herald, Vietnam Today and the Financial Times. In 2014, he remixed Robert Wyatt’s ‘Cuckooland’ album into a concert-length collaboration with Elaine Mitchener, Tony Hymas and the Brodsky Quartet. He studied Composition with Richard Steinitz and with Christopher Fox at the University of Huddersfield; with Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding and Richard Ayres at The Royal Conservatory of the Netherlands and with Roger Redgate at Goldsmiths. In 2014 he became an Output Assessor for the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework, a member of the AHRC Peer Review College and was Guest Artistic Director for the Sounds New Festival. Matt is a Reader in Composition and Sonic Art and Director of Research & Knowledge Exchange for the School of Music and Performing Arts @ Canterbury Christ Church University.
